Phthalates

Phthalates (THA-lates) are toxic plasticizing chemicals that are used to make products more pliable and fragrance to stick to the skin. This family of chemicals including DBP, DEHP, and DEP have been linked to allergies, asthma, infertility, and reduced testosterone. Especially alarming is the link between phthalates and the abnormal development of a boy's reproductive system (look up Hypospadias). You'll find that phthalates are used in a wide variety of products including fragrances, cosmetics, shampoos, soft toys for children and pets (often chewing toys), building and home decorating materials, and children's clothing.

I am starting a new blog series that highlights ingredients we should NEVER use! Check your labels, make replacements where necessary.

I've never been more excited about skin care!

Beautycounter skin care products

Our largest organ is the skin and everything we put onto it is absorbed into our bodies. Potentially harmful ingredients in our skin care products and cosmetics have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption.

Why is this important to me? I have personally been impacted by cancer and imagine you know someone whose life has been changed by the disease. My story starts with my mom, my dad, my aunt, and my grandma all being diagnosed with cancer. They are they reason I am taking a new path that aligns with my goals of using nutrition, skin care, and education to help my family and friends stay healthy. Even as I write this, my eyes are filled with tears.

1,400 vs 11 the number of harmful cosmetics ingredient banned in the EU vs US

Since mid-December, I’ve been trying a product line that I can officially say gets my esthetician approval along with some impressive media mentions as well. Through the holidays (travel, indulgent food/drinks, not working out) and especially after all of the weather changes we’ve had, my skin is softer and more radiant than ever!

Even more important, the company that I’ve partnered with is devoted to making radical changes to get safer products into the hands of everyone. Did you know the cosmetic industry is virtually unregulated? The last time Congress passed a law regulating the cosmetics industry was in 1938. Scary, right?

The reality is most people don’t know what they are putting on their skin every single day. Make it a habit (pretty please!) to check the ingredients in your skin care products and makeup. If you want to help get the message out quickly, let's get your girlfriends together for coffee or wine so we can talk about safe products and the ways in which they can make their lives healthier.
